Manufacturing Oncolytic Viruses: Where Complexity Demands Experience

Oncolytic viruses may draw on established vaccine and viral vector manufacturing technologies, but their clinical requirements create a distinct set of CMC challenges. Dose, concentration, potency, purification, administration, and commercial supply are tightly connected, making early manufacturing decisions especially consequential.
High final concentrations can increase aggregation, concentrate impurities, reduce recovery, and raise cost of goods. At the same time, manufacturing must preserve replication competence and other biological functions through purification, formulation, filling, freezing, and storage. Potency assays must also reflect the product’s specific mechanism of action rather than rely on generic viral measurements.
Learn how aligning the target product profile with process development, analytics, biosafety, supply planning, and commercial requirements can help teams identify risks earlier and build a more viable manufacturing strategy.
