RTU Components: Why You Need Them

As biopharma shifts more towards personalized medicine, the demand for producing smaller batch sizes is growing and CDMOs must be able to adapt their strategy to meet these evolving requirements. Traditional filling lines, which are typically built for the manufacture of blockbuster drugs, involve many processing steps that require separate filling lines in separate clean rooms, resulting in higher costs and lower flexibility.1,2,3
As a result, pre-sterilized, ready-to-use (RTU) components are gaining momentum. RTUs can simplify processing requirements that aseptic fill and finish process require by reducing the need for equipment, utilities and product space. RTU containers are not only sterilized but also pre-washed, so they can be placed directly into filling operations, thus reducing the number of steps in the process. What’s more, RTUs are often delivered in a nest-and-tub configuration which greatly reduces the risk of glass-to-glass contact. 3, 4
