Novo Nordisk announced its recognition as one of the world’s most sustainable companies in the Corporate Knight’s Global 100 2014 list. Novo Nordisk has been featured in all ten Global 100 indices since it was launched in 2005.
This year’s Global 100 list was made known at the World Economic Forum held in Davos. The Global 100 Most Sustainable Companies in the World tracks sustainability performance of corporations worldwide. Corporate Knights selected 350 companies for its shortlist from a pool of 4,000 publicly traded corporations from around the world.
Novo Nordisk was named the number one most sustainable company in the world in the Global 100 in 2012 and the global leader in diabetes care. The company was commended for its environmental and social performance. These include sustainable practices in energy and water consumption, as well as waste reduction. The company was also commended for its low employee turnover, management team diversity, and new patent filings which reflected a strong R&D base.
Novo Nordisk ranked seventh overall and second to Biogen in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry in this year’s Global 100. Even though the company was down two places in overall ranking from 2013, Corporate Knights recognized Novo Nordisk for its strong and consistent performance throughout the last decade.
The company stated it continues to drive the Global 100 index, “Novo Nordisk is highlighted as the single greatest contributor to the cumulative total return of the Global 100. Since the inception of the ranking, Novo Nordisk’s contribution to the total return of the Global 100 stood at 270%.”
Novo Nordisk Vice President of Corporate Sustainability Susanne Stormer said, “A strong performance in the Global 100 list over the past 10 years is a great achievement and I am proud to see this recognition of our Triple Bottom Line approach. But most importantly, it is also an encouragement to continue to find new ways to create long-term value for patients, employees, shareholders and society.”
